Somebody asked about La Mafia’s 30-year-anniversary and the album that is coming out to commemorate that. I checked the La Mafia Web site and it looks like they’re working on a live album for 2010. They have re-recorded the song, “Oh, Girl,” for this album. Visit their Web site to hear the song and visit their MySpace, too. Armando usually keeps up their Twitter so you might want to join that, too. I will keep you posted though with the latest news when I find out.
Thanks for your question and for visiting the site!
An exciting merger was announced today in San Antonio that could mean a reinforced Tejano Music Awards and a stronger, united Tejano music presence.
And it happened just in time – and possibly because of – the 30th anniversary of the Tejano Music Awards Show.
“TEJANO MUSIC 2010″ will take place July 9-11, 2010, in San Antonio.
Read an excerpt from the press release and stay tuned for more.
From the press release: “TEJANO MUSIC 2010 will bring together the Tejano Music Awards and the Tejano Music National Convention in an unprecedented display of unity from two of the most influential events in the music genre. Olathe, Kansas-based LatinPointe will produce TEJANO MUSIC 2010 weekend.
“We are pleased to have the Tejano Music Awards join with the Tejano Music National Convention in celebrating our historic 30-year anniversary,” says Frank Salazar, TTMA Board Vice President, “Having the top producers from important events such as the Latino Inaugural Gala, ALMA Awards and Premios Deportes reinforces our belief that this year’s Tejano Music Awards will be spectacular.” Read the rest of this entry »
It’s been a month and a half since my last post! But I’m back and so much is going on!
I’ll start with tomorrow’s event, which features one of my favorite female Tejano artists and musical artist in general: Stefani Montiel. She will be appearing in downtown San Antonio tomorrow night for a fashion show/contest where one lucky local designer will be selected as the winning design for Stefani’s GRAMMY Awards night dress.
The event details are: 7 p.m. – Proyecto Divina Runway Show – Rio Plaza (245 E. Commerce, 3rd Floor) – Tickets: $20 – Evening wear attire only – For info, contact: 210-507-5885.
See the table below to track the changes the category now known as “Best Tejano Album” has experienced throughout the years at the GRAMMY Awards. What is now the Tejano music category has its roots in the “Best Mexican-American Performance” category, which began in 1983 at the 26th Annual GRAMMY Awards.
In 1995, the category became known as “Best Mexican-American/Tejano Music Performance” and then in 1998, the category became “Best Tejano Music Performance” and has stayed with “Tejano” in the title since then.
The nominees for the 52nd Annual GRAMMYs were announced and can be seen in the previous post.
The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on “GRAMMY Sunday,” Jan. 31, 2010, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and once again will be broadcast live in high definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). For updates and breaking news, please visit The Recording Academy’s social networks on Twitter and Facebook.

TejanoBeat’s camera was the only one inside the Municipal Auditorium Friday afternoon when Ricardo Castillon of La Diferenzia and Nydia Rojas met to rehearse before tomorrow’s concert where they will sing the duet they made famous more than 10 years ago: “Hay Unos Ojos.”
The chemistry between the two – personally and vocally – is obvious. They joked around and sang a few bars of “Hay Unos Ojos” as if they’d never been apart. They were both so gracious with their time and took a few minutes for an interview before they got to work preparing for Saturday’s concert.
Check out the video and stay tuned for a more in-depth interview with Ricardo about his latest CD, the impact of the top-selling “Hay Unos Ojos” and future plans that could include more mariachi recordings with Nydia!
And, most importantly, buy your tickets for tomorrow’s concert and get all the latest details by going online to mariachimusic.com!
A BIG THANK YOU TO CYNTHIA MUNOZ AND RUBEN CUBILLOS!
Tejano fans should be excited about Saturday’s Mariachi Vargas Concert at Municipal Auditorium. The show will feature the top mariachi group and wraps up a weeklong of events that showcase the beautiful Mexican tradition of mariachi music.
But Tejanos will be particularly interested in the return of Nydia Rojas and Ricardo Castillon who after 10 years will reunite on stage to perform “Hay Unos Ojos,” a song that took the Tejano industry by storm. Rojas and Castillon combined their voices in what at first seemed an unlikely pairing of a Tejano vocalist from La Pryor, Texas, with a mariachi singer from Whittier, California, but the song worked.

Sorry for the long gap between updates but work and school is too much right now! I do want to post these pics from Albert Villegas of Mr. Jay Perez who performed in his hometown of S.A. last Friday (10/23) at Graham Central Station.
Jay has a lot going on right now! Known as “The Voice,” Jay is nominated for a Latin Grammy at the awards on Nov. 5 in Las Vegas. But last weekend, he also let the audience know that he was excited and happy for another reason: he got married on Oct. 17 in his hometown of S.A. Jay publicly thanked his wife, Monica, for standing by him through all of the ups and downs in his life.
His new wife will be accompanying Jay on Nov. 5 when he travels to Las Vegas for the 10th annual Latin GRAMMYS in Las Vegas. Jay is nominated in the “Best Tejano Album” category. Here is the competition:
